Thursday 22nd February 2018

Dear Parents/Carers,

Ofsted 2018.

We have now received the final report from OFSTED following our inspection on 23rd and 24th January 2018.  The full report is published on the OFSTED website on Friday 23rd February.  However, we are allowed to inform parents and carers of the outcome in advance.

The grades that can be awarded are Outstanding (1), Good (2), Requires Improvement (3) or Inadequate (4). In recent years the term ‘Requires Improvement’ has replaced the previous wording of ‘Satisfactory’ in the new OFSTED inspections.

Previously the school was judged as ‘Good’ (2) in 2014. However, in this recent inspection, the school was judged overall to be within the category of ‘Requires Improvement’ (3).

Having said that, the inspectors found many positive strengths within the school and were satisfied that the school is already making progress towards ensuring high quality teaching and learning for the children of Wavell Juniors.

OFSTED said that new and recently appointed senior and middle leaders ‘are bringing enhanced skills, subject expertise and fresh ideas to the school team.’  OFSTED also praised ‘recent improvement in teaching and learning, particularly across year 6, where children are making stronger progress.’

Inspectors identified that staff are proud to work at Wavell. Furthermore, ‘the majority of parents and carers feel confident that their child is safe, happy and well cared for.’

‘The school provides a rich diet of extra-curricular clubs and activities which colour pupils’ daily experiences. Moreover, parents and pupils appreciate the range of opportunities provided.’

The report also recognises that ‘the pupils at Wavell Juniors are polite, cheerful and bubbly. They are willing, keen to learn and respond promptly when adults issue instructions or requests. Pupils new to school feel especially welcome. ‘

Obviously, inspectors also highlighted a number of key areas which require improvement.

These include:

  • improving the overall quality of teaching across school – there is some good teaching but it is inconsistent
  • improved monitoring and subsequent evaluation of pupils’ behaviour and attendance to ensure maximum progress
  • middle leaders to evaluate the quality of teaching learning and assessment in their area of responsibly rigorously
  • reading across school needs to be taught consistently with a more coherent whole-school approach

It is obviously very disappointing for all governors and members of staff that the outcome of the inspection has found that the school requires improvement and will undoubtedly be very disappointing for you as parents also. However, it must be said that all staff in school are committed to providing the best education for the children of Wavell Juniors.

With the publication of the report, now is the time to look forward and continue to address the issues that you as parents are most concerned about – that is ensuring that the children of Wavell Juniors receive the high quality education that they deserve in a safe environment where all children are supported to reach their potential. We hope that you as parents will continue to support us with this aim.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Hunter.                                        Mrs. Wilson.

Headteacher.                                    Chair of Governors.
